St Peter's Square – where much of Angels and Demons is set |
I’m not sure when I first felt the
attraction of Rome, it was certainly before Dan Brown’s demons stalked the piazzas. Perhaps it was the 1953 film
Roman Holiday. The movie is a virtual travelogue, filmed entirely on
location. The film’s royal princess (played by Audrey Hepburn) explores the
city – with Gregory Peck as an opportunist but moral journalist. Who could
resist Audrey, Gregory and a gelato?
Rome has been used as the backdrop
to many films – and I’ve watched most of them. Whilst Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons suffered from being
transferred from page to piazza via CGI, I still lapped up the use of some real
locations, despite the mangling of the book’s contrived plot.
This year’s A-Z Challenge will
take you on a tour of Rome. Whilst I might not carry the brolly of a guide or
the accent of a Roman, I hope you’ll enjoy the trip!
