St Peter's Square – where much of Angels and Demons is set |
I’m not sure when I first felt the
attraction of Rome, it was certainly before Dan Brown’s demons stalked the piazzas. Perhaps it was the 1953 film
Roman Holiday. The movie is a virtual travelogue, filmed entirely on
location. The film’s royal princess (played by Audrey Hepburn) explores the
city – with Gregory Peck as an opportunist but moral journalist. Who could
resist Audrey, Gregory and a gelato?
Rome has been used as the backdrop
to many films – and I’ve watched most of them. Whilst Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons suffered from being
transferred from page to piazza via CGI, I still lapped up the use of some real
locations, despite the mangling of the book’s contrived plot.
This year’s A-Z Challenge will
take you on a tour of Rome. Whilst I might not carry the brolly of a guide or
the accent of a Roman, I hope you’ll enjoy the trip!
Have you ever seen the movie "The Shoes of the Fisherman" with Anthony Quinn, David Janssen, and Leo McKern? Some wonderful shots of St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica in that.

I don't know that film - I'll look out for it. Thank you for visiting!
DeleteSo looking forward to more photos and your tour of Rome. Yep, I remember Audrey H. and Roman holiday, Lovely film. Thankful I found your blog through the A-to-Z challenge.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI get homesick for Rome so much from time to time that I regularly dream about visiting again. I will be coming back for more :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Angels and Demons, I though it didn't do justice to the city.
Happy A to Z!

You're right - those CGIs were awful. Much of the city was just a blur.
DeleteRome is on my busket list so your month-long brolly-less tour will give me some ideas of where to visit first. And your photos are always great.
ReplyDeleteLizy, you need to visit Rome - I hope I can persuade you.
DeleteI've never visited Rome, but would love to.
ReplyDeleteMy last trip to Rome was a little bit like a taste of bruschetta -- good but leaves you wanting more. I would love to have the time to spend there just soaking up the atmosphere and exploring!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Rome so will drop by during the month of April to see what I can learn. My A to Z theme is French Faves, something I know more about. . .Nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteHistory at school, and then a visit when I was ten or thereabouts was my first introduction. Smitten and gobsmacked at the same time! :)
ReplyDeleteA Roman Holiday and Three Coins in Fountain both lovely romances, watched much later.
Best wishes,
Nilanjana.
